The ATV BugJune 2000 -- About this time I was bitten by the ATV bug. My old friend Jerry WA2FNQ was now working for one of the largest premium content providers for cable TV. I am intentionally avoiding the name since I have not received his permission to disclose his employer, But I am sure everyone would know them and has probably spent lots of time watching there programming. Jerry is in charge of the RF transmission department that sends the signals for their programming as well as many others up to the satellites. With his vast knowledge of television transmission, it was only natural that he would extend this to ham radio. Well after having a couple of long chats with him, I decided to give it a try. I ordered the PC Electronics TC70-20 70cm ATV transceiver. As my luck would have it, just about the time that the unit arrived Jerry informed me that the repeater they were using up in Connecticut had blown up and was off the air. As it turned out they had lost the power feed to the site and it was going to be down a very long time. Perfect, I buy a rig and now I can only talk to myself. Well at this point, my luck changed a local ham, Joe WA2PJP, had decided to put up an ATV repeater on a monster hill within a mile of my house. The site is perfect and everyone from Jerry's old group has moved over to the new repeater. It is a really cool to be able to now see the guys you are talking to. Although I have not been as active on the ATV stuff as I would like, I am hopping that I will now have some more free time to use this exciting mode.
The Old/New ClubJanuary 2003 -- I had not been active in the Radio Central club for several years. My work and personal lives had gotten too busy and I just did not have the time to devote to the club, although I did pop into their web site every so often to see what the club was up to. As luck would have it I was going on a sales call with my boss to see a potential client about some software they needed to handle their inventory. When the contact person comes out, I recognized him immediately as an old ham friend. As it turns out Emil KD1F is the VP of the company that we were going to see. It also turns out that Emil, is now the President of Radio Central. It did not take much talking to renew my interest and I rejoined the club.
